In an announcement on Wednesday, Oct. 23, Hochul revealed that she signed legislation to extend several existing red light camera programs in Westchester, Albany, and Nassau counties.
The legislation also includes the "largest expansion" of the red light camera program in New York City's history, Hochul's office said.
"The safety of all New Yorkers is my top priority and we know that red light camera programs are effective in protecting New Yorkers from dangerous drivers," Hochul said of the expansions, adding, "Today I am extending the authorization of programs across New York and establishing an additional program to maintain our progress on traffic safety."
The legislation extends, expands, or creates camera programs in these areas:
Westchester County:
- An extended program in White Plains;
- An all-new program in Greenburgh, including a camera at the intersection of Ardsley and Old Army Road;
- An extended program in Mount Vernon;
- An extended program in New Rochelle.
Other areas:
- An extended program in Albany;
- An extended program in Nassau County.
Additionally, Hochul also signed legislation increasing penalties for drivers who overtake and pass school buses. As per the new law, the fine for a third or subsequent violation within three years will go up to $1,500 from $1,000.
This legislation also authorizes a new speed camera program in up to three school zones in the Ulster County city of Kingston, meant to protect children on their way to and from school.
"Tragically, we’ve lost too many lives in Ulster County to traffic-related accidents, and this new law is a critical measure that will help make our streets safer within Kingston school zones," said State Sen. Michelle Hinchey.
